Mitigating Risks in E-Commerce: Considerations and Strategies

Activity 7.2 – Reflection

Engaging in e-commerce has become an essential part of my daily life as a college student, offering convenience and efficiency for both personal and academic needs. However, I am aware that the digital marketplace comes with risks, so I make it a priority to take precautions to protect myself from fraud, scams, and other vulnerabilities. Reflecting on my experiences, I’ve developed a set of considerations to ensure safe and secure transactions.

One of my key practices is using Cash on Delivery (COD) whenever possible, as it allows me to inspect the product before making a payment. This adds an extra layer of security, especially when I’m uncertain about a seller’s credibility. Beyond this, I only shop on reputable platforms with secure connections (HTTPS) and take the time to research the seller’s reputation by reading reviews and customer feedback. When COD is not an option, I use secure payment methods, such as digital wallets or credit cards that offer buyer protection, and I avoid direct bank transfers or unfamiliar payment gateways.

To avoid falling victim to scams, I remain cautious of deals that seem too good to be true and verify their legitimacy before proceeding. I also ensure my devices are protected by keeping their antivirus software updated and avoiding public Wi-Fi networks for transactions unless I use a VPN for added security. Instead of closely monitoring traditional bank statements, I focus on tracking my payment history within the apps or platforms I use and checking my linked accounts for unauthorized transactions. Additionally, reviewing the return, refund, and privacy policies of online platforms ensures I am fully aware of my rights as a consumer.

By following these measures, I can navigate the world of e-commerce with confidence and peace of mind. Using COD whenever possible provides me with additional security, while my vigilance in all aspects of online shopping minimizes risks. These practices not only protect my financial and personal information but also allow me to enjoy the advantages of e-commerce in a responsible and secure manner.
